Students need to attend school to achieve in school. Families need to send their children to school on time every day. Staff and community members also play a role in ensuring that students attend school – every student, every day. We want all students to attend school regularly. NUSD wants to support students, their families, and our community in ensuring every student is able to attend school every day. We miss you when you’re not there!

Missing School Can be a Signal that Students Need Support

We care about each one of our students, and when they are at school each day, we know they are healthy, safe, and learning. When students are not in school, they miss crucial instructional time.

Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to fall behind and not read at grade level. Students with regular attendance are more successful in school and remain on track to graduate.

Attendance can be a signal that a student needs support. We are here to support our students and offer the following resources:

  • Counseling support
  • Connections to community partners, e.g., North Marin Community Services,
  • Home visits
  • School Supplies

What You Can Do

An infographic shows apple images representing school attendance levels.

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
  • Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before school starts.
  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
  • Try to schedule non-Covid-19 related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • If you are concerned that your child may have Covid-19, call your school for advice.
  • If your child must stay home due to illness or quarantine, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.

Resources for Families

NUSD has compiled resources, both District and external, to help families ensure students can attend school healthy and ready to learn each and every day. Find below resources by topic and general community resources.

When is Sick too sick for school?

There are times when children need to miss school due to typical childhood illnesses. However, when many health issues are managed, we can reduce the amount of time children are out of school. Learn how to reduce the amount of time your children miss school due to health concerns by visiting the resources below.
