Later Start Committee at NUSD
This year NUSD formed a Later Start Committee, headed by Ivan Chaidez, Assistant Superintendent, Education Services, and includes parents, teachers, students, administrators and community members. The Committee is conducting a Community Survey, along with a student, parent and staff survey, to learn what the Novato Community thinks about a later start time for middle and high schools. The survey can be found here or on the NUSD website under Later Start Committee.
In addition, the Committee is looking for more community members to be involved. If you’re interested in participating on the committee or have any comments, please contact Ivan Chaidez at firstname.lastname@example.org.

The purpose of the committee to investigate the impact of start times on the well-being of students and to study the feasibility of changing start times for secondary students at NUSD. This investigation aligns with the most modern research on the impact of school start times on the brain and behavioral physiology of students as well as their capacity to get the most out of their learning environment. The goal of the committee is to make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees in March 2017.
The Later Start Committee has met three times and has formed seven workgroups to address:
- Health & Science Research
- Bell/Master Schedules for High Schools
- Bell/Master Schedules for Middle Schools
- Elementary Bell Schedules if Middle & High Schools Started Later
- Surveys for Students, Parents, and Staff
- Before & After School Activities
