Board Meeting Highlights – October 15, 2019    All Board reports can be found on Agenda Online.   Not all items listed on the Board Agenda are included in these Highlights.

Student Presentation:  Students at Lu Sutton Elementary School shared Zen Zones with the Board tonight. Zen Zones are places where students can engage the thinking part of their brain again by giving them access to a space with objects to comfort, calm, and engage them.

Non-Agenda Public Comment:  Several community members commented on teacher compensation and class size.  Many, many teachers were present in the audience.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

PUBLIC HEARING #4 AND DISCUSSION ON PROPOSED TRUSTEE AREA MAPS:  After much discussion, Trustees shared their agreement on moving forward with Trustee Area Map Scenario 7A. They also shared agreement with Sequencing Option #3.  Formal approval of the Trustee Area Map and Sequencing Option will take place at Public Hearing #5 at the November 5, 2019, board meeting.  Trustee Area Map Scenario 7A and the Sequencing document can be found under Item 13.a.

REVIEW AND APPROVE BOARD POLICY 7310 NAMING OF FACILITY: Yancy Hawkins brought forward the second reading of Board Policy 7310 Naming of Facility.  The updated policy includes a new section on “Naming Rights” which authorizes the board to enter into a written agreement granting any person or entity the right to name any district building or facility. In addition, a section on “Memorials” expanded to include commemorative trees, monuments, or other district facilities.  The Board approved the policy with minor changes.  More information can be found under Item 14.a.

INITIAL PROPOSAL TO REOPEN CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION (CSEA) FOR 2019-2020:  The Board approved CSEA’s proposal to negotiate the following articles of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between NUSD and CSEA. More information can be found under Item 14.b.

NUSD CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM: Amie Carter and Katie von Husen provided the Board with an update on NUSD’s Student Threat Assessment Team, School Crisis Intervention Team, Incident Command System Team, and the new STOPit app introduced to students and parents this fall.  Lots of good information on this item can be found under Item 15.a.
