Announcements:  Trustees attended school back to school nights

Presentation:  Rudy Perez-Diaz, NUSD alumnus, read his poem “We the Same Color” which won last year’s high school poetry contest.  Carole Mills from Senator Mike McGuire’s office read a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Senate.  His poem can be found in this Marin IJ article.

Superintendent Hogeboom presented a revised Equity Imperative and a draft of the District Priorities and Goals for 2018-19.  Items 13.a and 13.b.

Kris Cosca, Deputy Superintendent, gave the school board an update on enrollment for the 2018-19 school year.  NUSD is experiencing a trend of smaller incoming Kindergarten classes than prior year graduating classes. This year there is a greater decline in Kindergarten than anticipated, 39 fewer students. There is a slight decline in the Middle School level with enrollment at San Jose lower than expected and being investigated. At the High School level there is an overall increase of 41 students over projections. Overall, enrollment at Day 5 is 13 students fewer than projected and overall about 105 students less than 2017-18 at this time.  NUSD receives an average of about $9,000 per student. Item 13.c.

Yancy Hawkins, Assistant Superintendent Business & Operations, introduced Loren Soukup with School & College Legal Services of California who presented information on Lease-Leaseback construction delivery method.  Item 13.e.

The Board of Trustees approved combining the Performing Arts Center and Center for the Sciences Building Projects at Novato High School for efficiencies and cost savings. Item 14.a.

The Board of Trustees also approved combining the Performing Arts Center and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Building Projects at San Marin High School for efficiencies and cost savings. Item 14.b.
