AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination
About AVID
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This college preparatory program is currently offered as elective classes at NUSD high schools, Hill Middle School, San Jose Middle School and Hamilton Elementary 6th-7th grades.
AVID Mission
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID’s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide and districtwide learning and performance.
AVID Students
AVID students are typically minority, low-income, have special circumstances, or are the first generation in their family to attend college. AVID students demonstrate academic potential, desire, and determination.
AVID Overview
AVID is an elective class for grades 6-12 designed to target and enroll students from the academic middle into a school’s most rigorous courses. Students receive support in the AVID elective class to complete a rigorous college preparatory path through tutoring and a proven curriculum based on writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. In addition to offering the AVID elective for grades 6-12, other K-12 schools in the district will implement the use of AVID Schoolwide Strategies including Cornell note taking, test preparation, research skills, and use of higher level thinking skills and inquiry-based study methods.
