Dear NUSD Community,

It is with great pleasure that the Novato Unified School District Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Kris Cosca, Ed.D. as the new superintendent for the Novato Unified School District effective July 1, 2019. Kris will succeed Jim Hogeboom who was named Superintendent for the San Rafael City Schools at its meeting on June 10, 2019.

“Kris possesses the skills and experience that are the right fit for our district and will provide continuity and focus.  He will continue to work closely with our staff, parents and community to move our current initiatives forward and to further our commitment to ‘Engage, Inspire and Empower’ every student,” said Board President Debbie Butler.

Kris is a believer in our public school systems which he has served for 27 years. He cares deeply about our students and has broad educational experience as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and both director and assistant superintendent of human resources. Kris’ vision for an educational system serving all of our students, values, and leadership style make him the right person to lead our district.

Kris is a valued and proven leader who is ready for this new role.  During Kris’ four years with NUSD, he has played a key role in executive cabinet, coached and provided leadership development of principals and other managers, led our elementary principal team, served as lead negotiator with our union partners, overseen the reorganization of the NUSD Human Resources Department, and developed and rolled out our employee appreciation program. Kris is a lifelong learner who earned his doctorate in organizational leadership and possesses his Chief Business Officer Certification from the California Association of Business Officials.

Kris knows NUSD well, has worked closely with Jim Hogeboom over the past four years, and is ready to build on the foundational work Jim did during his tenure. Kris will bring focus to our system, celebrate successes, and thoughtfully lead us through future challenges.

Kris’ parents were both educators and he is a proud product of our public school systems. is married and lives in Napa where his wife teaches Biology and AVID and coordinates the school’s AVID program. Kris has two children. His daughter attends college in Southern California and his son is a high school senior.
