Dear Novato Community,

It has come to our attention that some students may be planning to protest the recent election results via a walk out on the afternoon of Monday, November 14th.  As educators, we support our students’ right to express themselves and grow into young adults who are socially-conscious and civically engaged. Any potential walk-out or protest has not been initiated or actively supported by school staff or administration, but we are here to keep them safe if they choose to participate. To that end, we will be providing a safe, open space during our lunch break where students can gather and be heard.

Please know that any missed class time due to participation in a protest or walk-out will be considered an unexcused absence. We also want to emphasize that free speech is encouraged and protected, but hate speech is not. Our campuses mirror the larger community where political views run the entire spectrum. All students, no matter where their views fall along that spectrum have a right to a safe, inclusive learning environment. Any action in violation of school discipline policy will be promptly addressed by school administration, up to and including disciplinary consequences.

We understand our students’ are having different reactions to the presidental election.  We appreciate our students’ desire to have their voice heard and acknowledge their right to peacefully protest. We want them to do it safely and responsibly and to respect the differing perspectives each of us holds.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at [email protected].

Thank you.
