NUSD Board to Review Change to Election Years

Novato, CA…The Novato Unified School Board is scheduled to consider amending Resolution 22 to shift its 2017 election to 2018.

The resolution is in response to SB 415, the California Voter Participation Rights Act. The law is intended to increase voter participation by aligning off-cycle local elections with even-year statewide elections. The Board passed Resolution 22 on February 14, 2017 to begin shifting elections in 2019. However, it has been discovered that the majority of Marin County districts are shifting elections in 2017 to 2018. Districts are required to mail a notice of approval to all voters and joining other districts should result in substantial savings to NUSD.

The terms of the school board incumbents would be extended up to a year under the proposed amended resolution.

The school board will consider the resolution when it meets in open session at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7. The meeting will be held at 1015 7th Street, Novato.
