Novato, CA…Art education continues even during remote learning for Novato Unified’s 4th and 5th grade students thanks to the partnership with School Fuel and MarinMOCA.

In 2017, School Fuel, Novato’s Education Foundation, and Marin Museum of Contemporary Art (MarinMOCA) began a partnership to provide art education to NUSD’s 4th and 5th graders. Working with local artists, students learn to create an art journal that has a self-portrait on the cover and additional drawings on the interior pages.

When schools turned to remote learning, art education remained part of the curriculum. Kits with all the art supplies have been provided for each student, and MarinMOCA art instructors meet with students virtually.

Fran Rozoff, 4th/5th grade teacher at Olive Elementary School, says it best, “It is critically important for the students to maintain these connections with our community and be able to take time to share their talents through artistic expression. We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the MarinMOCA, especially during this time of virtual instruction.”

“NUSD supports art education for our students and we’re thankful to our partners, School Fuel and MarinMOCA, for providing this rich experience with local artists,” commented Superintendent Kris Cosca.
