The Board of Trustees held their second virtual Board Meeting using Zoom Video Communications.

Non-Agenda Public Comment:  There were numerous public comments and the topics addressed a San Marin teacher, grading, NUSD’s budget, and fiscal planning.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

2020-2021 Budget Assumptions:   Yancy Hawkins provided the Board with a budget outlook emphasizing that we are in uncertain times and that things are going to change a lot over the next 3-4 months and the next year or two.  His presentation starts around 59:20 on the video from the Board meeting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2LJOkSo9Ug.

NUSD Budget pressures continue with some additions:

  • COVID-19
  • Slowing State Funding to NUSD and Likely State Budget Cuts in 20-21, 21-22, or Both
  • Declining Enrollment
  • Increases to State Mandated Pension Contributions
  • Unfunded Federal Mandates
  • Low Funding Level in Marin County

Next Generation Science Standards Update for Elementary and Middle Schools:  Twenty-two (22) elementary and 14 middle school teachers piloted science curriculum:  elementary teachers piloted TWIG Science and middle school teachers piloted Green Ninja Science.  After collaborating for two days, the elementary team would like to continue exploring other programs next year that better meet the needs of NUSD students. The middle school team would like to explore supplemental materials. More information can be found under  Item 12.b.

Proficiency Based Education: NUSD’s Teacher Leadership Team (TLT) works closely with Marzano Research in partnering to develop the stages of Proficiency Based Education (PBE) for NUSD with a focus on common assessments, reporting student learning, and community engagement with PBE.  The Board approved the Marzano contract which is funded from the Low Performing Students Block Grant. Certificated Teacher Appreciation Week:  The Board approved a Resolution recognizing that our teachers play a critical role in educating and shaping our children. They are kind, patient, hard-

working, dedicated, and understanding professionals that mold our children’s lives in a positive direction.  Resolution No. 29/2019-2020 can be found here under Item 13.c.
