BOARD REORGANIZATION:  The Board of Trustees held its annual reorganization. The Board voted to continue with the current its current officers:  President – Debbie Butler; Vice President – Maria Aguila; and Trustee Representative to the Marin County School Board Association Board of Directors – Greg Mack.

SCHOOL CLOSURE/ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SIZE COMMITTEE:  Last school year, the Elementary School Size Committee made recommendations to address increasing enrollment and revenue before closing a school. Kris Cosca, Superintendent, made the recommendation to the Board not to consider school closure this year due to the fact that after many years of declining enrollment, NUSD has more students in the 2019-20 school year than in 2018-2019. In addition, in current (month 4) TK/K class size is 627 compared to 550 from both the 2018-19 and 2017-18 school years (month 4).  See Item Item 14.c. for more information.

DASHBOARD DATA:  Amie Carter presented an overview of NUSD’s California Dashboard with the results of the state accountability measures for the 2018-19 school year.  Item 14.a. contains the Dashboard data and presentation.

STUDENT RETENTION DATA:  For the fifth year, NUSD conducted a survey of families whose students did not continue with NUSD.  While there’s a downward trend of elementary students leaving the district, 8th grade students leaving the district continues to be an area to address.  More information can be found under Item 14.b.

FIRST INTERIM BUDGET:  The 2019-20 First Interim Budget report was presented.  Some positives include:  increase in enrollment in 5 years and 1-time state revenue. However, NUSD continues to see slowing increases to State funding, low projections of COLA in out years and increased State mandated pension costs. More details can be found under Item 15.a.
