Novato Unified School Board Approves Return of 7th & 8th Grade Students to Campus

(Novato, CA) … On February 9 at its regular board meeting, the Novato Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to bring 7th and 8th grade students in the Flexible In-Person Learning program back to campus in a hybrid model on February 22, 2021.

After discussion and public comment, the Board concluded that it is in the best interest of students to return to campus.  The return of 7th and 8th grade students was scheduled for January 4, 2021, however, Marin County returned to the purple tier in December 2020.  The District’s Return to Flexible In-Person Learning Plan, approved by the Board on October 6, 2020, was paused due to the county’s placement in the purple tier.

The pause was in line with the guidance at the time; however, since October 6, 2020, there was a change to State guidelines regarding bringing students back to campus that allows schools that were previously open to more than 10% of their student population to continue reopening even when a county moves to the purple tier. Since NUSD’s sixth grade students were on the middle school campuses at the time Marin County moved to the purple tier, NUSD can bring seventh and eighth grade students back prior to exiting the purple tier.

When Marin County enters the red tier, NUSD will schedule the return of students in grades 9-12 to campus.
