Board Highlights – August 21, 2018

During Board announcements, Trustee Aguila reminded everyone to be safety conscious with school beginning on August 23, especially with the SMART train running and students walking and riding their bikes to school.

Jim Hogeboom introduced Mark Brewer, Novato High Principal to the Board of Trustees.

10,000 Degrees presented to the Trustees the program they provide to students at NUSD high schools. Last year they gave out $455,415 in scholarships to 205 students and these scholarships and the program are open to all students.  Agenda Item 12.a.

Data Matters, a data dashboard of student information for NUSD staff, was developed and presented by Alex Perez, IT Supervisor.  Agenda Item 13.a.

Amie Carter, Assistant Superintendent Education Services, gave an update on the NUSD Summer Education Programs.  Agenda Item 13.b.

Amie Carter also provided an update on the Partnership with New Media Learning. In the 2017-18 school year, 1,121 students visited the Marinovation Learning Center during the school day and 2,085 students participated in after-school programs.  Agenda Item 13.c.

Jim Hogeboom, Superintendent, presented the contracts for NUSD’s four primary partner organizations: Buck Institute for Education/Envision Learning Partners, National Equity Project, Epoch Education, and Clark Consulting Group. All four organizations have agreed to quarterly meetings with district staff, called Coherence Meetings, where each group provides an update of their key activities to ensure everyone is working together towards NUSD’s district goals.  The Board approved the contracts.  Agenda Item 14.a.

Yancy Hawkins, Assistant Superintendent Business & Operations, presented the 45-day Revision to the 2018-19 Combined General Fund Budget.  Overall, projected revenues decreased by ($645,550).  The Combined General Fund ending fund balance is projected to be $8,542,567 or 9.8% of the Combined General fund expenditures. The Board approved the revised budget. Agenda Item 14.b.

Yancy Hawkins presented NUSD’s response to the Marin Grand Jury’s Report, “Yellow School Bus for Traffic Congestion Relief.”  The Board approved the response which was to participate on a Yellow School Bus (YSB) committee, led by Marin Transit, to explore the potential expansion of YSB services in Marin.  Agenda Item 14.c.

Yancy Hawkins presented a recommendation from the 2017-18 Budget Advisory Committee to conduct a special education efficiency review. Mr. Hawkins presented a contract with School Services of California to do this work.  The Board approved the contract. Agenda Item 14.d.
